magnitude of his sin he would prefer to wait for 40 (days, months or years) rather than to pass in front of him." Abu An-Nadr (r.a) said, "I do not

*Narrated by Abu Salih As-Samman (r.a):*
*I saw Abu Said Al-Khudri(r.a) praying on a Friday, behind something which acted as a Sutra. A young man from Bani Abi Mu'ait, wanted to pass in front
of him, but Abu Said (r.a) repulsed him with a push on his chest. Finding no alternative he again tried to pass but Abu Said (r.a) pushed him with a
greater force. The young man abused Abu Said(r.a) and went to Marwan and lodged a complaint against Abu Said (r.a) and Abu Said (r.a) followed the
young man to Marwan who asked him, "O Abu Said!(r.a) What has happened between you and the son of your brother?" Abu Sa'id (r.a) said to him, "I
heard the Prophet (s.a.w) saying, 'If anybody amongst you is praying behind something as a Sutra and somebody tries to pass in front of him, then he
should repulse him and if he refuses, he should use force against him for he is a satan." *

*Whenever Allah's Apostle (s.a.w) came out on 'Id day, he used to order that a Harba (a short spear) to be planted in front of him (as a Sutra for his

ablution water. If anyone got some of it, he rubbed himself with it, and anyone who did not get any got some of the moisture from his companion's
hand. I then saw Bilal (r.a) take a staff and fix it in the ground, after which the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) came out quickly in a
red mantle and led the people in two rak'ahs facing the staff, and I saw people and animals passing in front of the staff.*

*Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 9, Number 472: *

*Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (r.a):*
*Once I came riding a she-ass when I had just attained the age of puberty. Allah's Apostle(s.a.w) was offering the prayer at Mina with no wall in front
of him and I passed in front of some of the row. There I dismounted and let my she-ass loose to graze and entered the row and nobody objected to me
about it. *
The Muslim should place something in front of him during prayer as a barrier between him and the passersby in front of him, and that he gets closer to it as the prophet used to do. Imam Bayhaqi reported that the prophet (S.A.W.) said: "If you pray, then pray toward sutrah (some barrier) and get closer to it." So if you enter the Masjid and want to pray, then get closer to the wall of Qiblah so much that there is just enough room between you and the wall to pray. If you prostrate, there should be no room between your prostration spot and the wall more than a sheep pass. Imams Bukhari and Muslim reported that: "Between the place of his prostration (S.A.W.) and the wall there was no room more than sheep pass." In another Hadith reported by Imam Bukhari when the prophet (S.A.W.) used to pray, he leave between him and the wall three arm lengths." If you find people already at the wall of the Qiblah, then pray behind one of them because he will be as a sutrah for you like the companions used to do. The Muslim should not pass in front of the praying Muslim. Imams Bukhari, Muslim and others reported that the prophet (S.A.W.) said: "If the passer in front of the praying person knew how much sin he committed, it would have been better for him to wait for forty than to pass in front of him." The salah is not invalidated by anything (passing in front of the praying person). 'Ali, 'Uthman, ibn al-Musayyab, ash-Sh'abiy, Malik, ash-Shaf'i, Sufyan al-Thauri and the Hanafi scholars are of the opinion that the salah is not invalidated by anything which passes in front of a person. This is based on the hadith recorded by Abu Dawud from Abu al-Waddak who says: "A young person tried to pass in front of Abu Sa'id while he was praying. Abu Sa'id held him off and then the young man tried again. Abu Sa'id pushed him off. This happened three times and when [Abu Sa'id] finished [the prayer],he said: 'The salah is not invalidated by anything but the Messenger of Allah said: 'Repulse [the person who is trying to pass in front of you] to the best of your ability for he is a devil.'" http://www.mail-archive.com/minjamal@yahoogroups.com/msg00044.htmlhttp://www.jamaat.net/ebooks/Fus/fus2_29.html
